Comment on the new JROTC program in one Buffalo School
| Automatic enrollment in ROTC provokes protest at high school Unless they opted out, freshmen at Hutchinson-Central Technical High School (Buffalo, NY) were automatically enrolled this fall in Junior ROTC. Partamian brought this to our attention a little while back, and I just wanted to comment on it without relegating it to the comments section. I want to applaud the school, it's principal, and any other administrators or persons that had a role in instituting this program. This is one of the best moves I have seen from a public school anywhere in this country, and I think they should be congratulated. First of all, (listen up NY ACLU) this was not a draft, and does not violate anyone's rights. JROTC is excellent program that teaches respect, discipline, motivation, and teamwork. It builds self esteem, and gives children a taste of the amazing gift and pride of service. However, this is an important point, there is no service requirement in the military after high school. Being enrolled in JROTC does not mean that Uncle Sam has somehow snatched up your little child as part of some secret plot to institute a draft. The US Military does not want nor does it have room for people that don't want to be there. The most elite, well-trained, well-equipped fighting force in the world does not need any elitist, pansy liberals that think they are too good to be in the military. JROTC is different though. Kids in high school need discipline. They need to be a part of something larger than themselves. They need parental involvement and adult supervision. Service in JROTC gives the opportunity for every child to to be exposed to a career choice that they may not yet know that they want, and all without any obligation whatsoever. This principal and this school obviously want every child to have the opportunity to succeed in life, and there is no greater opportunity than with the armed forces. Guaranteed job training and money for college, health care, housing, etc. Every child that goes through this program will thank the school later. Most parents will too. I think they should be cheered and not sued. If more schools seriously considered what they could do for the well being and future careers of their students, every child would be better off. M |

post a commentI agree.
I was in JROTC in high school and it played a large part in my joining the Army. It is a great program, a little on the nerdy side, but still a great program.
I believe that any high school and college that receives federal money ought to have a mandatory ROTC! Not that you have to join, but one that you may have access.
That has been a big thorn in my side. I'm very glad to read this. Thank you.
